Vancouver Symphony Orchestra’s music director, Bramwell Tovey, was invested into the Order of Canada as an honorary Officer today (November 21).

That's him you see above, shaking the hand of Governor General David Johnston at the ceremony held at Rideau Hall, in Ottawa.

The awards praised Tovey for his contribution to the country's cultural life: "Former artistic director of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra for more than a decade and co-founder of its New Music Festival, he has long been committed to promoting and composing new music. His artistic depth and charisma make him a favourite guest conductor, and he has appeared before some of the world’s most prestigious orchestras. A driving force behind the creation of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra School of Music, he will become the Orchestra’s longest-serving music director in 2014," read the Governor-General's site today.

In all, Johnston bestowed the honour on two Companions, 18 Officers and 22 Members to the Order. Also invested as an Officer were UBC's head of the voice and opera division at its School of Music, Nancy Jane Hermiston—lauded for enriching Canada' opera scene, particularly through education—and famed Stratford-based film and theatre actor Colm Feore.

Tovey was appointed to the Order in the summer of 2013.
