SACRAMENTO-

The Sacramento Unified School District, like many other school districts FOX40 News spoke with, says most children attend schools close to their homes.

They believe getting to class isn’t going to be a big safety concern, as of right now, but that could change so they want parents to be prepared.

Parents across the region have been receiving calls and emails have also been sent out. One from Dry Creek School District informs parents, “If the weather necessitates additional safety measures such as canceling school or early dismissal may happen.”

SCUSD spokesperson Gabe Ross says they are preparing for the worst and hoping for the best.

“These things evolve in real time and we will make sure we are keeping our finger on the pulse of the most current information, and the goal is to have a normal school day tomorrow,” Ross said.

Some parents aren’t so sure. With wind gusts up to 60 miles an hour and several inches of rain expected, those we spoke to aren’t taking any chances.

“I feel like it is really unsafe to be driving about with a big storm going on,” parent Terry Buford said.

Other parents who have older children in schools have a different outlook.

“God, no. He is in 6th grade,” mom Judy Mansour said. “He can’t afford to miss it. He misses one day and they are far behind. The little one, she can probably stay home.”

SCUSD’s after school programs will also be open Thursday. If class has to be canceled or they call for early dismissal, there will be staff on hand to take care of the kids and give parents time to safely pick them up.
