The Royal Delta Inn in Galt is expected to be shut down Thursday and its more than 100 permanent residents will be forced to leave.
Many fought back tears so they could fight for their home.
“I won’t go on the street. I’d rather take my life than go on the street,” resident Kimberly Bloom said.
Bloom had to reschedule her breast cancer surgery so they could go to city hall along with dozens of other residents.
Their home, the Royal Delta Inn, was tagged with more than 1,800 violations two weeks ago. Twenty of those had to be fixed by Thursday at noon, or residents would be cast out on the street.
Those residents say they had no warning, and are hours from being homeless. City Manager Jason Behrman met with the residents Wednesday, but held firm on shutting the Inn down if it wasn’t made safe.
“We can’t, in all good conscience, allow residents to continue to reside there as long as those things remain outstanding,” Behrmann said.
He did empathize with the families fearing eviction.
“We are not going to just throw you out on the street, you will have a roof over your head,” Behrmann said.
The residents were able to convince the building inspectors and city managers to come out late Wednesday and talk with the Inn’s owners, but the meeting didn’t go well.
The managers weren’t able to prove enough progress was done on the property.
