LightWedge Reading Light Misc. Supplies – June 1, 2002

3.6 3.6 out of 5 stars 111 ratings

Imagine a pane of bright, even light illuminating only the page you are reading. That's the idea behind LightWedge. No glare, no stray light to disturb others. Just rest it on the page and read. Now, imagine what you could do with a light like that.

- Elegently simple design. Thin and lightweight, easy to handle and pack. Weighs on 8.5 oz. with batteries.

- Eye-friendly LED illumination. No bulbs to burn out in the middle of a great story. Ever.

- 40 hours of light on four AAA batteries. That's like 7 coast-to-coast flights. (Batteries not included.)

- Holds the page flat. Doubles as a bookmark and conversation starter.

- Distortion-free, optical-grade acrylic lens reflects LED light onto the page, not into your eyes. It only looks like magic.

Bought one of these battery operated LightWedge Lights some years ago and loved it not only for its intended purposed but also because it was sure to end up being the topic of conversation. At times I'd forget to change the batteries so the light would be dim but I'm not blaming the LightWedge for my failure to change the batteries (four AAA, not included) on a more regular basis.

When the rechargeable LED LightWedge became available, touting something like 15 hours of life, I bought one of them and gave my battery operated Wedge to a friend of mine.

I didn't realize that the 15 hours, unless there was something wrong with my LED Wedge, includes off time. I'd charge the unit in the morning, get ready to use the Wedge at night, and it would illuminate for a second. I read at bars and restaurants, folks, and just cannot be tied to an outlet. I'm still not knocking the LED LightWedge, I do like the idea of two light intensities, but for the type of reading I do, the LED LightWedge, in its current design, just doesn't work for me.

Just received my second battery operated LightWedge today and it's not the original black version but a blue (reminds me of Body Worlds as the batteries and other workings are visible) version. Not a big deal. What does concern me some is that this "new" LightWedge arrived with some scuff marks on the reading area. The box wasn't marked "factory resealed" in any fashion so I'm just curious why the reading area isn't pristine.

I'll be more mindful of changing batteries and if anyone is interested in my LED LightWedge...just pay for postage and it is yours.

Sept 21 Update: Found myself at the shore last night, watched the day old full moon rise, and read my book without being concerned that my LightWedge was going to crapout on me. My LED Wedge? Given to a cohort.

At first I was so happy to read at night, and THEN....the batteries wore down. So I purchased the best batteries sold, but after a few days, the light on the Lightwedge would wear down...then it was okay. Next night the same things happens again and now each time I try to use it, it just drainly runs. CANNOT see the page and it is so dim. WHAT A NIGHTMARE.. I thought I found a good reader, but this is a rip off and I want my money back !

Overall I am pleased with the performance of the LightWedge reading light. It provides ample light directly to the page without the glare of one bright narrow beam. My only complaint is one that has been noted by others in multiple reviews - the lens scratches VERY easily. For this reason I purchased it new rather than used hoping to avoid receiving an item which would already be scratched when I purchased it. No such luck. The light arrived in its original manufacturer's packaging and was already pretty significantly scratched when I opened it. That said, while I was annoyed to receive a new item that was already damaged, the light still works despite the scratches and once you're immersed in what you're reading you stop noticing them.

I love this thing. I live alone, so I am not worried about needing to be courteous of someone trying to sleep next to me while I stay up all night. This serves another valuable purpose for me. I take it with me on the airplane. I travel a decent amount and I do my best to avoid turning on the overhead light. I find that it is too obtrusive to other people on the plane who are trying to sleep or enjoy the flight in relative peace and darkness. Cue my lightwedge. I can read with more than enough light and not bother the people around me.

I like it so much I got one for my mom for Mother's Day. She fits into the category of readers who have tried EVERY booklight on the market and thus are dissatisfied with them all. She loves her lightwedge. Good brownie points for me.

I do not like that the carrying case comes separately, though I do recommend you get one if you opt for the paperback-sized lightwedge and take it with you on trips.

the light is wonderful to travel with. I use it to read in the hotel room while my hubby sleeps and I can't turn on the lights or while were traveling at night I can read. however. this light scratches so badly!! this is my second one and my other one lasted a couple of years but already this one is scratched pretty bad. I always carry it in a book carrier to keep it from scratching. I think the quality went down.

I really don't understand why there are so many complaints about this rechargeable version. Needing a replacement for my 15-year-old battery-powered LightWedge (still using my 16-year-old paperback unit) I was glad to see that LightWedges are still available and thought I had ordered a battery-powered one because of all the negative reviews. When I discovered that it was rechargeable, I was ready to return it immediately, as the wrong item, then thought, "I might as well try it."

I charged it, used it that night (3+ hours), used it the next night (1- hours), just checked and it's still lighting and all this on the same charge. Just as one would expect. As far as the screen scratching issues, that IS a (minor) problem. There are two solutions: One (based on 16 years of experience), ignore it because it really doesn't affect the performance significantly or Two, get some acrylic polish/wax and use it on both sides of the screen AS SOON AS you take the protective plastic off the scree (wish I had known this with my first one but see solution #1).

So I really can't understand that either that many people didn't know what they were doing or there were that many defective units shipped.
