EuropaCorp has picked up Big Game, the Samuel L. Jackson action movie that debuted as part of the Midnight Madness sidebar at the Toronto Film Festival.
The Amblin-meets-1980s action movie tells of a 13-year-old boy (Onni Tommila) who has to spend 24 hours alone in the wilderness as part of his village’s rite of passage. His goal is to prove himself by nabbing a deer armed with only a bow, but when Air Force One goes down by devious design and the boy finds the president of the United States, played by Jackson, is still alive, an adventure of a lifetime ensues.
The cast also includes Ray Stevenson, Felicity Huffman and Jim Broadbent.
Finnish filmmaker Jalmari Helander wrote and directed the movie as an homage to the films he grew up watching.
The movie premiered Friday and drew immediate interest, setting up an auction between multiple companies, including Lionsgate.
In the end, EuropaCorp prevailed in a deal pegged at nearly $4 million, according to a source.
WME, which reps Helander, brokered the domestic deal. Altitude Film Sales is handling international.
