AUBURN-

Placer County health officials believe a local listeriosis case may have been caused by caramel apples.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, 28 people nation-wide were infected in 2014 from the outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes. Five deaths have been reported, as of Dec. 18.

Symptoms of listeriosis include fever, muscle aches, and sometimes nausea or diarrhea. It’s rare, but not impossible, for the infection to spread to the nervous system.

Health officials are now warning everyone to stay away from pre-packaged caramel apples.
