Unpredictable as it is, Game of Thrones has a few constants: death, betrayal and regular shouts of “Hodor!”
But it appears that last one won’t be true of season five, with Hodor actor Kristian Nairn saying his and Bran’s (Isaac Hempstead-Wright) storyline won’t be featured in the upcoming batch of episodes.
“We have a season off and we have a year’s hiatus, solely because I imagine our storyline is up to the end of the books,” he said in an interview with Australia’s The ABC.
HBO declined to comment.
Fans of George R.R. Martin‘s epic fantasy series are no strangers to shifting storylines for the show, with key elements from later books introduced earlier in the series’ timeline. Season four even went significantly beyond what Martin has already covered in print.
If the news is true, the year off for Hodor and Bran comes after they had their most exciting episode yet in June’s finale. After spending years on the back burner, Bran met the three-eyed-raven and the Children of the Forest — characters that are apparently set to become more important as the show goes on.
“The Children of the Forest and the three-eyed raven are part of the deep history of the show that will actually come back as the show goes on,” finale director Alex Graves told The Hollywood Reporter the morning after “The Children” aired.
Ahead of season four, Hempstead-Wright told THR he “longed for more excitement” for Bran’s storyline, noting it’s tended to be in the background even while “having a hugely direct impact on Westeros.”
He may have to wait a little longer.
