A man accused of fleeing from Stockton police and escaping from the Honor Farm is now accused of attempting to escape from the San Joaquin County Superior County.
The San Joaquin County Sheriff”s Office told FOX40 Pedro Anthony Arquiaga was handcuffed by his wrists when he hopped over a barrier and bolted for a side door in Courtroom 25. They said a deputy intercepted Arquiaga, and subdued him in the courthouse.
“It seems like the underestimated him a bit. He probably thinks it’s comical since he’s been able to do it so many times,” said Stockton resident Marco Dal Parto.
“Maybe they should have used shackles,” said Stockton resident Jay Sosa.
FOX40 first reported about Arquiaga in November, when he was accused of stealing a Mercedez Benz off a trailer in Stockton and evaded arrest. Police said he fled on foot, jumping over fences in a residential neighborhood until he was taken down by a dog named Monster.
Arquiaga made news again in December when he allegedly escaped from the Honor Farm in French Camp, a minimum security facility with a 12 foot barbed wire security fence.
Stockton Police say Arquiaga was apprehended a week later in January after he attempted to rob a Chase bank at Tam O Shanter Drive.
His alleged pattern of behavior has some people wondering what it will take to keep the 20 year old in custody.
Retired psychotherapist Lynn Rodgers said if a repeat offender does not change their actions, than their punishment is not working. She does not think locking Arquiaga up again will make him learn a lesson.
“I don’t think that’s going to do any good. It’s just gonna put him in a society that’s gonna make him harder and harder to rehabilitate. It criminalizes kids and I don’t think it serves our society well at all,” Rodgers said.
