Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes is adapting Anthony Trollope‘s Doctor Thorne for ITV, the BBC reports.
Fellowes is finding time in his busy schedule to write the three-part drama, produced by Hat Trick Productions, with filming to begin later this year.
Set in the fictional picturesque English village of Greshamsbury, Doctor Thorne tells the story of Mary Thorne, niece of the titular village doctor, and her troublesome romantic life. The source novel is part of Trollope’s “Chronicles of Barsetshire” series.
Fellowes said he took on the project as he was a “lifetime devotee of Trollope,” revealing that the 19th-century English novelist was “certainly the strongest influence over my work that I am conscious of.” He added that he “could not be more delighted” to be working on the adaptation.
As well as taking on Doctor Thorne, Fellowes is also working on the sixth and final season of Downton for ITV and has begun work on NBC’s The Gilded Age, a period drama set in 1880s New York.
Back in March, Fellowes talked to THR about his full slate of projects, suggesting that his energies were focused on the Crawleys of Downton before moving on to other things. “But I do want to be off with the old love before I’m on with the new,” he said, before adding: “I think I’ve got enough latitude to be allowed that, but certainly The Gilded Age is looming large in my future.”
