MODESTO —

An abandoned gas station in Modesto caught fire Saturday afternoon, forcing crews to respond to fight the flames.

The fire was first reported around 3:05 p.m., with the flames coming from a former Valero station by Morgan Road and S 7th Street under the Hatch Road overpass at Highway 99.

The station had been abandoned for quite some time.

With help from the Ceres Fire Department, Modesto firefighters managed to contain the fire, which had at one point spread to the roof of the building.

About two hours after the initial report, the fire had been mostly put out. Crews are still working on putting out smaller fires inside.
