SACRAMENTO —

American news journalist and anchor Lester Holt will receive an honorary doctorate at Sacramento State’s upcoming commencement ceremony later this month.

According to the State Hornet, the California State University Board of Trustees will bestow Holt  with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.

Holt will also speak at the ceremony.

Professor Jaccie Irwin has lobbied for Holt to be chosen for the nomination int he past. The Sac State Communication Studies Department confirmed the nomination in a department email.

Holt was born in Marin County and went to Cordova High School in Rancho Cordova. He majored in government at Sac State, but never graduated.

Holt currently serves as the interim anchor for “NBC Nightly News.” He is filling in for Brian Williams, currently serving a six-month suspension for exaggerating tales from an Iraq War mission in 2003.
