The sequel to Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters needs to hunt for a new director.
Tommy Wirkola, who directed Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton in the 2013 fantasy-adventure film and was expected to helm the follow-up, has left the project, according to Fangoria. Wirkola’s next film is Dead Snow 2, which hits theaters Oct. 10.
“I’ve just decided to not direct Hansel & Gretel 2,” Wirkola said. “I have been lately attached to a few more things. It’s just a matter of time and priorities.”

Wirkola added that he wants “to do something a little bit different now and not just do sequels.” He confirmed that he wrote the Hansel & Gretel sequel’s script and submitted it to Paramount, and he hopes to stay involved with the film in some capacity.
Last week, Renner told Cinema Blend that he is not currently attached to the sequel but would be open to starring in it if his schedule allows. Renner can next be seen in Kill the Messenger, releasing theatrically Oct. 10.
Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters grossed a so-so $56 million domestically when it was released in January 2013, and news broke in March 2013 that Paramount and MGM were developing a sequel.
