Indie film distributor Viva Pictures has partnered with DirecTV to acquire the U.S. rights to Exeter, the latest horror movie from Marcus Nispel, the director of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake and Conan the Barbarian with Jason Momoa.
The film will debut exclusively on DirecTV July 2, followed by a theatrical release by Viva Pictures later this year.
Written by Kirsten McCallion, the story centers on a group of teens who party at an abandoned asylum. Tinkering with the occult (never a good idea) leads to a possession, and bloody mayhem ensues.
The film has a cast that includes Avatar bad guy Stephen Lang, Brett Dier and Brittany Curan and was executive produced by horror vets Jason Blum and Steven Schneider.
“I am thrilled to have our film Exeter premiere exclusively on DirecTV, a premium platform that is also supported with massive P&A,” said Nispel. “Horror fans can now enjoy my work ‘uncompromised.’ “
Exeter marks the first film in the newly-formed partnership between Viva Pictures and DirecTV to release films exclusively on DirecTV during a 30-day window prior to a theatrical debut. One benefit being touted is national exposure to DirectTV’s 20 million customer base for the film, filmmaker and talent.
WME Global made the deal on behalf of the filmmakers.
