STOCKTON-

Several hundred people gathered in the Burlington Coat Factory parking lot on Hammer Lane Friday night for a chaotic car club meet.

Burnouts began around 9 p.m.

Highway Patrol broke up the gathering a short time later. Officers say the activity is dangerous because bystanders stand just feet away from the cars.

An employee of a store that shares the parking lot told FOX40 these meets happen weekly. No drivers appeared to have been cited.

Businesses say officers should be doing more to keep things under control.

Later Friday, a car that fled the scene of  the sideshow led officers on a short chase before crashing into a light pole at Lorraine Avenue and Hammer Lane.

Inside the car was a 20-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman, who was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
