If you’re wondering why Warner Bros.’ Man of Steel didn’t feature a post-credit sequence teasing the next movie in its DC superhero sequence — a la 2010’s Green Lantern — it turns out that it’s all down to one man: Christopher Nolan.
As revealed in a profile of the Interstellar director from The Guardian, Nolan — who acted as executive producer for the 2013 Zack Snyder movie, as well as working on its story — made the decision not to follow Marvel’s lead when the studio floated the idea. According to the newspaper, he responded, “A real movie wouldn’t do that.”
Nolan has denied the Guardian’s story, releasing a statement saying “I would never say someone’s else’s film isn’t ‘a real film.’ The quote is inaccurate.” Representatives for the director say that the use of the quote in the Guardian piece wasn’t fact-checked.
Marvel’s post-credit codas have been embraced by fans, with other moviemakers inspired to attempt their own in response. It’ll be interesting to see whether 2016’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice is similarly lacking a post-credit scene, given that the next Warners DC movie will be just months away at that point.
Interstellar will be released Friday. If nothing else, you now know that you can safely leave the theater as soon as the credits begin and not miss anything.
