Batman does a lot of swinging around in his batarang while cashing down Catwoman, fights some bad guys, opens closed hatches, does some crawling Metal Gear style, fights some bad guys, swings around some more, opens closed hatches, and a lot of repetition. For some reason, this formula doesn't disappoint here. The music is great to and gets one hyped up when it starts pounding on as the fight scenes between the thugs begins. By the way, all the thugs are wearing the same clothes. Nothing inventive there. Would have been nice to have them change it up, but they didn't. I would recommend this version to anyone who has a Nintendo 3DS, 2DS, or a PS Vita. I am not sure if this is a direct port of the PS3 version so i won't say anything else except that this game is original in its own right.

As it is well-known by now, BAOB is considered to fall within the 2D "Metroidvania" genre. True, it features some Metroidvania activities, such as back-tracking to open new areas with a new tool. But as another reviewer also mentioned, as you're playing you can't help but feel that you're being led in a certain direction the whole time. In the great Metroidvanias, such as Symphony of the Night or even the original Metroid, the game required some trial and error and exploration. It was possible to get lost and be in danger as you backtracked to safety and the correct path. In BAOB, I never felt that I would get lost. I felt that I chose my path early on and the game determined the rest.
Still, I had fun finding game secrets, such as health or armor upgrades. This is probably where it most successfully felt like a Metroidvania game. I didn't find everything, because apparently it's not possible to get all of the secrets in one play through. One secret item in particular, Batman's secret armor sets, which derive from various story arcs in the comic series (New 52, etc.), can apparently only be completed by playing through the game multiple times.
This is unfortunate, because there is really no good reason to play through the game more than once, especially with so many other good games waiting to be played. One good reason for that is the obnoxious boss fights. Ok, maybe one or two boss fights in particular. Some are interesting in that they require you to figure out a simple chain-of-events style puzzle, and once you do the fight is over quickly. One fight is horrible and should last 5 minutes, except it takes an hour to figure out the quick time events to get it right. And one fight that relied on quick time events was barely winnable because my button inputs wouldn't trigger properly.
Besides that reason to avoid multiple play-throughs, once you've seen the game once there's not much else to see a second time. The comic-style cutscenes are nice, admittedly, and supposedly they change depending on how you choose to fight the three main game bosses (one of the game's gimmicks I decided not to go into detail about, but you can easily read about elsewhere). But it's probably not worth going through those boss fights again, or simply bothering with the game world in general. The game does also feature little "mysteries" to solve with your detective skills, but those felt boring and pointless. If only they had thrown in some collectible features to flesh out characters stories, like the audio tapes in Arkham Asylum, I may have felt inclined to search for more of them.
Despite the fact that I'm mostly complaining about this game, I will reiterate that I had fun playing it, and it kept drawing me back in. In the end everything comes down to price. Besides the game's imperfections, it also features no extras like Streetpass to give it more life. It's a third party game, so you don't even get Nintendo Club points for a new game purchase. And, again, it took me 8 hours to complete, and created no desire to play through it more than one time. Ultimately, in a lot of ways this just doesn't feel like a whole game. But Batman fans and Metroidvania fans (with a grain of salt) won't hate it. If you want to give it a shot, I would look for it used at a sub-$20 price point.
