PLACERVILLE-

Crews discovered gold Thursday morning underneath Main Street in Placerville.

The gold was mixed in with dirt moved aside during a water main upgrade project. Placerville’s City Manager Cleve Morris says the dirt from Main Street is going right back into the ground where it came from.

Resident Kirk Smith says more of the glittery, flaky fill dirt should have been set aside, and saved for the benefit of Placerville.

He says there’s thousands of dollars buried in the ground, unburied, and then buried again – not to mention the wow-factor.

“Just for the sake of memorabilia you could have some of it out in jars for people to buy,” Smith said.

But Morris says that’s not the plan – that  there isn’t enough gold here to make it worth extracting and the Main Street upgrade is already costing a mountain of money.
