ELK GROVE-
The City of Elk Grove is moving ahead with its plan to build a huge soccer complex, which could become one of the premier such facilities in the country.
Elk Grove Public Affairs Manager Christine Brainerd told FOX40, 100 acres of land in the southern part of the city has been purchased, and Elk Grove officials met with designers/consultants last week regarding the planned complex. According to Brainerd, it will include “at least 16 tournament soccer fields”.
Earlier this year, Elk Grove expressed interest in building an MLS-sized soccer stadium and securing a professional franchise to anchor the planned complex.
And while it appears the City of Sacramento has a clear advantage over Elk Grove in pursuit of an MLS team, Brainerd told FOX40 the city it still “confident” in its MLS bid.
Major League Soccer and the Sacramento Republic have made it clear they prefer a new stadium be located in a downtown location, but Elk Grove could still be a key partner if Sacramento is successful in its attempt to gain an expansion franchise.
The new Elk Grove complex could serve as the training facility for a new Sacramento team. According to Brainerd, Elk Grove “is open to other opportunities to partner with MLS”.
There is currently no timeline for construction and completion of the new Elk Grove soccer complex.
