SACRAMENTO-

A shooting in South Sacramento startles an entire neighborhood and parents at a nearby day care center.

Sacramento Police Department went to the corner of La Fresca Court and Shining Star Drive to find several witnesses to a shooting.

Witnesses said they heard five to six gunshots, and saw a man in his 20’s get shot just after 1 p.m. Monday, after getting into a fight with several young men.

The shooting happened right across the street from Phoenix Park Activity Center, where children were present a daycare.

Jennifer Vasquez went to the daycare right after the incident.

“When I pulled up, I was like ‘What is going on?’ I was like ‘Was my brother going to be okay?'”

Her 4-year-old brother Angel has attended the daycare for the last two years.

“Here, he’s safe with his teachers, but in an outside area, and I hope they weren’t playing outside when this all went down,” Vasquez said.

Luckily they were inside. But the school was placed on a controlled lock down, only releasing kids to their parents.

Sacramento Police said the victim was shot in the upper body.

“The victim is in critical condition, and is being treated at an area hospital,” Officer Justin Brown of the Sacramento Police Department said.

Vasquez said she is happy her brother was not a witness to this horrific event.

“He asked me ‘Why are there a bunch of cops outside?’ I would hope that he was safe because he doesn’t know anything,” Vasquez said.

Sacramento Police were talking to several witnesses inside the squad cars; witnesses said the suspects fled in a vehicle.

No vehicle description or suspect descriptions were released, and nobody is in custody at this time.
