STOCKTON—
A sideshow turned violent Wednesday night when police responded to the parking lot near the 4500 block of Pershing Avenue.
“Rocks were thrown at police vehicles,” Police Department spokesperson Joe Silva told FOX40 Thursday, adding that driving recklessly in a private parking lot is also illegal.
“We were not here to fight. We were not here to do anything wrong. We were just here to show off our cars and have fun,” Sano Aguirre, who attended the car meet, said.
Aguirre says he found out about the event on Instagram from a flier posted by an account named Bay Area Racing. A spokesperson from the group told FOX40 that they do not condone any illegal activity.
“As far as I know, we were supposed to meet for a race. It wasn’t going to happen, I guess” Aguirre said.
Police arrived before the races began. Within minutes, rocks were thrown at two Stockton Police vehicles, causing $1,500 worth of damage.
Aguirre, who says hundreds came out from as far out as the Bay Area Wednesday, says next time the car meet will be somewhere else in Stockton.
“This was a lousy place to meet. I was telling everybody we should have met in an empty parking lot,” Aguirre said.
Crime-stoppers is offering a $10,000 reward for anyone with information on who threw the rocks. Silva told FOX40 the two vehicles are currently in the shop.
