As if Jane the Virgin hadn’t already made the what-to-watch-live decision at 9 p.m. Mondays really easy, Sleepy Hollow goes and trips over its goofy foot.
Now, I really like Sleepy Hollow. Always have. The crazier it gets, the better it is. But this season, the show has made some dubious creative decisions, none more damning than bringing in the pointlessly unnecessary Nick Hawley (Matt Barr) character. This is a ripple effect that may be hard to overcome. Not only has he seemed a ridiculous add-on to an otherwise smoothly running show, but his character ends up getting right between Ichabod (Tom Mison) and Abbie (Nicole Beharie), which is precisely where he should not be.
He’s also messing with the screen time and character development of Jenny (Lyndie Greenwood), who should be getting more work, not less.
I delved into this this issue more in depth on my TV Talk Machine podcast. Ahead of tonight’s episode this could be an issue to keep in mind, unless Surfer Boy suddenly goes missing in the forest.
As you’ll hear in the podcast (it’s a simple click-and-play setup, plus there’s a link for subscribing to the iTunes feed), the developing problems of Sleepy Hollow will not be resolved quickly or easily. And there are some other issues that are hurting the series — each avoidable with some forethought, which didn’t happen.
I’m still hanging in there, but the sooner the writers and producers figure out how to fix this, the better. Right now it’s just annoying. Later it could be a deal-breaker.
