Actor John Wayne came onto the scene back in 1927, only two years before the Oscars were born. Throughout his career, Wayne appeared in nearly 250 films. On April 9, 1979 at the 51st Annual Academy Awards, Wayne made his first, and last, public appearance since he underwent surgery back in January for cancer. When presenting the coveted award for Best Picture, Wayne declared that he would be "sticking around for a whole lot longer." However, only two months later, Wayne died of cancer at the age of 72.
