NATOMAS-
For the second night in a row families near Bridgecross Drive in Natomas heard gunshots, saw officers with their weapons drawn and cruisers racing to their neighborhood.
Sacramento Police say a vigil held for 22-year-old Jose Leon, who died in his family’s home after a standoff with police, got out of control. As one officer was making a traffic stop to quell the chaos, shots were fired, but nobody was hurt.
Investigators are still trying to determine if they were aimed at police or just up in the air.
According to the Sacramento Police Department, multiple shots were fired at Bridgecross Drive and Lazzini Way in Natomas, just a few blocks away from the vigil.
The officer at the traffic stop did not return fire and no arrests were made, but all available units were called to the scene from midtown and downtown.
The vigil brought in a large crowd, estimated around 100 people. Police arrived to stop the sideshow, as a car was spinning donuts without head or tail lights on.
FOX40 has obtained a profanity-laced video of people from that vigil shouting ‘**** the police,’ driving recklessly and doing donuts in the middle of Bridgecross Drive.
It was a disturbing scene for neighbors who watched huge SWAT vehicles rumble down their streets Tuesday as officers surrounded a house where Jose Leon was believed to be holed-up after carjacking a Bronco in Rio Linda.
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s department is investigating that incident and tells FOX40 that Leon ran from a CHP officer who pulled him over for speeding on his motorcycle.
It’s believed Leon then carjacked the Bronco, fighting with the officer who tried to stop him and drove to a family home on Bridgecross Drive in Natomas.
The officer fired at him during that struggle.
After holding police at bay for several hours in Natomas, Leon was found dead inside the home where he was barricaded.
