Chromebooks can now run Linux via ChromeOS

Good news for users of Chromebooks, the notebooks that run Google's net-centric Chrome OS: you can now run Linux right within a window instead of having to switch back and forth between the two operating systems.

 

François Beaufort, a Google employee, said this is possible through the downloadable Crouton extension for Chrome.

 

"(With the patch), fearless people can now run their favorite Linux distributions on their Chrome Devices in a nice window without jumping between Virtual Terminals as before," he said.

 

But he said the Chrome device must be in Developer Mode and not Dev Channel.

 

A separate report on tech site GigaOM said that while running Linux on a Chromebook is not new, this would be the first time Linux can run within a ChromeOS window.

 

"Prior to today’s announcement, you had to use a virtual terminals and switch back and forth between your Linux distro and Chrome OS. Now it’s in one handy dandy window right there in the main operating system," added tech site The Next Web. — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News
