Elk Grove Sports Complex EIR Scoping Meeting Tonight

November 12, 2015 |

As part of the process of annexing a large parcel of land into city limits, the City of Elk Grove will hold an environmental impact report (EIR) scoping meeting tonight.

The land, which includes a 99-acre parcel the city purchased for the development of a soccer and sports complex, is currently outside of current city limits. The parcel lies east of Highway 99 and south of Grant Line Road.

Before the city pushes forward on the development of a $45 million multi-field soccer facility and stadium, it will seek to have the annexation approved by the Sacramento Local Agency Formation Commission. As part of the application process, an EIR must be conducted.

Tonight's meeting will be held at the Elk Grove City Hall city council chamber and will be held between 6 and 8 p.m.

Looks like another meeting got in under the wire with short notice to the public.

Also see Folsom beat us to the punch on getting Voxpro or did we try? But on the other hand why would they want to locate in a community who's main focus is luring visitors off the highway for some fast food or discount shopping? Did we forget to push the Olympics and MLS scenario? The Irish are big on soccer, could have been a bankroll waiting in the wings.

$50 million dollars on a soccer facility when there are only 6,000 youth soccer players that reside in Elk Grove?

That is nuts!

Any large soccer tournament that comes to the Sacramento region will go to Roseville. More hotel rooms, better restaurants and a huge regional shopping center.

What does Elk Grove have?

Fast food joints, chain restaurants, sandwich shops, smaller hotels that target the business traveler. These small hotels do not have conference and dining facilities that are needed for large soccer tournaments. There is not enough total room capacity to handle a large tournament.

Who came up with that idea in the first place?

And to spend $500,000 on a design and feasibility study?

Elk Grove needs to pull their heads out of the clouds. This place is not the Bay Area and is not even Roseville.

The recession was the only reason EG's land grab and sprawl slowed down. Now that the recovery is on the way, full speed ahead! There's a lot of dirt left to turn into cash, plus the old original EG landowners have been patiently waiting for their cash payoffs.

The politics of growth is couched in terms of those who profit versus those who feel it degrades their quality of life. Winners: Land sellers, developers, independent contractors, realtors, banks, retail business owners, and local government employees. Losers: The silent majority.

It was always my understanding that the purpose of an EIR Scoping Meeting was to inform decision-makers and the PUBLIC of the potential environmental effects of a proposed project. Why was this not highlighted on our city web site with full information well in advance of the meeting? The city certainly has no problem highlighting Free ride days on RT and that a Costco is coming or FREE Kings tickets. LAFCO should be made aware of this hugh oversight by our city leaders. Just my 2cents......

I really don't know what the big deal is. The world revolves around politics and not some darn EIR. What's good for votes and for business is good for the environment--that is why we have Overriding Considerations! I trust leaving the details to the professional bureaucrats and let's move on.

I, Anon.13:16, think you're probably right Proud to be led. We must accept that our leaders know what is best for us and not always second guess them since we are not qualified to make those important decisions. Showing up at City Hall and trying to take part in the process only undermines what our leaders are putting before LAFCO. So, we'll move on and leave it to the professionals. NOT...

Elk Grove should just stick to being the food truck capital of the world. The "professionals" can always be counted to show up.

Attended this meeting. It seems the citizens believe the city is trying to pull a fast one surrounding the 99 acre sports field parcel with "industrial and commercial" zoning so the impacts for the EIR are much more palatable and less impacted while the belief is, once the EIR is passed the city will swoop in and rezone for housing.

Based on what I've seen and heard of this city council, that actually makes perfect sense. It maybe time to vote out these councilmen as soon as we can and get some honest and selfless citizens up on the dais.

Meeting got a bit heated. Unfortunately, turnout was extremely low, perhaps due to the lack of notice which was also brought up. - This city seems to be a rogue entity.

The only way to have the development elite shaking in their boots is to organize a petition to have growth control placed on the ballot. Anything short of that is just whistling dixie...

It would be interesting to see a summary of taxpayers monies spent on Feasibility Studies starting with the Civic Center project to date. I think we would all be shocked. We would most likely find that one of our many projects could have been built and paid for with those funds by now. Instead we have nothing...just more ongoing studies on the same projects and still spending money for them.

I do wonder just what it takes for the taxpayers of this fine city to finally say ENOUGH!
