Apparently, the Guardians of the Galaxy halo effect includes in-joke post-credit sequences, with Marvel Entertainment announcing that Howard the Duck — the character who cameoed at the very end of James Gunn’s summer blockbuster — will get his own ongoing comic book series next year.
Written by Chip Zdarsky with art by Joe Quinones, the series will feature the character becoming a private investigator in the Marvel Universe. Zdarsky told Entertainment Weekly that he loves “the contrast of Howard against both the normal world of us hairless apes and the weird world of Man-Things and Dr. Stranges and Spider-Mans. ‘Case he doesn’t fit into either, really. I’m just going to continue exploring those contrasts, but my ultimate goal is to make it funny.”
The series will be the first open-ended series for the character since his 1970s heyday, when his creator Steve Gerber and artist Gene Colan fashioned the series as a satire on pop culture that barely intersected with the superheroics of the regular Marvel Universe. At that time, the character was popular enough to anchor not only a monthly comic book, but also a short-lived newspaper strip and 1976 presidential run (Yes, really).
The new Howard the Duck series will launch in Spring 2015. Between this and the seven Guardians of the Galaxy series that will be running at the same time, it’s only a matter of time before Marvel announces a Collector mini-series based on Benecio Del Toro’s performance in the movie. We can only hope.
