The smell of this slow cooker mulled cider speaks to the holidays and that winter is in full swing. It has a way of warming the heart like no other.
When I use my slow cooker to make a mulled cider, it gives me the opportunity to time it just right for when we want to have it ready to serve for our newly arriving visitors. I love that about using a slow cooker.
Slow Cooker Mulled Cider
- 2 My Mulling Spice Sachets (store bought or your own mulling spice recipe)
- 2 quarts good quality cider
- Optional: Adults only – 2 to 4 cups of rum to add a splash of rum per cup of cider
Directions:
Pour the cider into a 4-quart slow cooker. Add two mulling spice sachets. Set the slow cooker heat on low and cook for 4 hours. After 4 hours, remove the mulling spice sachets and discard. Move the slow cooker heat to warm and serve immediately in some nice glass mugs with a stick of cinnamon; or allow the mulled cider to cool and pour it into a 2-quart jug, label, seal and refrigerate to reheat at a later time.
To add an extra spark to an adult hot mulled cider, add a bit of rum to your taste – yum! Seriously, with or without the rum, it is just as good.
Notes: A good quality cider is key to achieving the best flavor in a mulled cider. Equally important is the freshness of your mulling spices. I know I don’t need to say this but here goes anyway; if you use a store bought mulling spice mix make sure to follow the directions on the label.
I do realize you may wish to make mulled cider without a slow cooker. That’s simple too. Place all the ingredients in a large saucepan and bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer for about 30 minutes and you’re good to go. Serve it immediately or store it as I recommended above.
That’s it. If you use a slow cooker, it truly is a “set it and forget it” kind of recipe. Now I think I’ll have a cup or two of my own mulled cider, with a bit of rum. 😉. Want to join me?
