The Dallas Mavericks have been very busy during the first few days of 2015 NBA Free Agency, and now appear primed to make a move to add Jeremy Lin as their newest point guard.

According to Yahoo! Sports‘ Adrian Wojnarowski, the Mavericks are in talks with the Los Angeles Lakers to complete a sign-and-trade deal to acquire Lin.

Adding Lin would be an understandable move for the Mavericks, who are rather short on point guards after watching Rajon Rondo sign with the Sacramento Kings via free agency. The only other options currently on the roster are Raymond Felton, who has seen a steep decline over the years, and Devin Harris, who is nothing more than a backup option.

The Mavericks are also looking to re-sign J.J. Barea, but are still battling with the Miami Heat to reach an agreement with the 31-year-old guard. Even if Dallas did manage to sign Barea, adding Lin would give them a handful of options to work with at point guard.

Dallas would obviously need to use a sign and trade in order to acquire Lin, as they lack the necessary cap space to sign him to a market-value deal after agreeing to deals with DeAndre Jordan and Wesley Matthews. It’s unclear at this point what they would be forced to send to the Lakers, but it shouldn’t be too much — and it’ll be well worth the investment from a depth standpoint.

When Lin isn’t asked to be a prominent scorer, he’s a quality point guard who can be a valuable asset to any NBA team. With the Mavericks, he could shine as a facilitator and occasional playmaker at the point. With Matthews, Dirk Nowitzki and Chandler Parsons in the mix, he wouldn’t be relied on to contribute significant points on a nightly basis.

It looks like the deal could be done very soon, so check back to look for further updates.
