Prices at the gas pump are already surging, ahead of the normal summer increase.

But what’s behind the price spike?

Gas prices are up 13 cents across California in the past couple of weeks. Crude oil is the reason — it’s trading at just under $50 a barrel, up $10 from last month.

According to gasbuddy.com, that comes to an average of $2.26 a gallon in the Sacramento area.
