CBS’ summer drama Extant is adding a new series regular to its mix.
Magic City alum Jeffrey Dean Morgan has joined the Halle Berry drama as a series regular, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
In the mystery thriller about an astronaut (Berry) who discovers she has put the human race on a path to destruction, Morgan will play J.D. Richter, a roguish womanizer and a cop of the future who is a mercenary/bounty hunter. He is freewheeling, hard-drinking and fearless, bordering on reckless, mostly because he’s got nothing to lose. He is the everyman who thought he had seen everything, until Molly (Berry) enters his life.

Morgan, traditionally one of pilot season’s most in-demand actors, joins the drama amid a creative reboot for its sophomore run, following a critically panned freshman season. Berry, Pierce Gagnon and Grace Gummer are the only regulars to return. “We are making changes in terms of the mythology of the show,” CBS Entertainment chairman Nina Tassler told reporters this month. “Molly is much more proactive after the threat to her world.”
Morgan’s credits include Grey’s Anatomy and History Channel’s Texas Rising, as well as features like Watchmen, P.S. I Love You and the upcoming Bus 657. He also played Joe DiMaggio in Lifetime’s Marilyn TV mini-series. He’s repped by UTA, Viewpoint, Rob Gomez Management and Bloom Hergott.
Extant will return in the summer.
