SACRAMENTO —

The City of Sacramento and the Sacramento Kings announced a donation of $3 million to purchase an original sculpture by world-renowned artist Jeff Koons.

The sculpture, from Koons’ “Coloring Book” collection, will be put on display in the upcoming Downtown Sacramento Entertainment and Sports Center (ESC) plaza.

“Jeff Koons is perhaps the biggest art star in the world today,” said Crocker Art Museum Director and CEO Lial Jones. “His work is featured in collections of major museums around the world. It is significant that the City of Sacramento and the Kings are purchasing his sculpture for permanent exhibition in the public realm.”

The sculpture features a tall design of stainless steel, and is meant to capture the enjoyment of the world from a child’s perspective.

The donation of $3 million will be added to the $5.5 million ESC construction budget invested in the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission (SMAC)’s “Art in Public Places Program.” The cost of acquiring and installing the sculpture is around $8 million.

The Sacramento City Council will consider approval of the proposal’s contract terms at the March 10 meeting.

This marks the first time artwork by Koons has been purchased by a municipality for permanent display.
