Irish singer’s moving video about grief will make you weep (WATCH)

I hadn’t ever cried at a music video until I watched Stephanie Rainey’s promo for her new song “Please Don’t Go.”

The Irish singer posted the clip to her Facebook page a few days ago and it has received 2.5 million views (and counting). Stephanie’s Half of Me EP is also currently sitting at No. 2 on the iTunes chart, above the likes of 5 Seconds of Summer, James Bay and Ed Sheeran.

The song is lovely but it’s the video that is really touching the hearts of millions.

It features real people who have all been touched by grief. Each man and woman holds up placards revealing how their loved one died, how their death made them feel and what they would say if they could speak to them one last time.

“Sorry for not being able to save you,” said the man whose loved one died of meningitis. “I respect your decision,” said the man whose loved one died by suicide. “You’re my hero,” said the woman whose loved one died in a car crash.

The Cork-born musician revealed the personal pain behind the song on her Facebook page: “For the past few months I’ve been working on a video for my track ‘Please Don’t Go’ that I am so honoured to share with you all. It’s hard to put into words what this video means to me and how grateful I am to the people who took part — it wasn’t easy. A few years ago, I lost my nephew very suddenly and it was something that changed my life forever. I can still remember how it felt and I know there are so many other people who have gone through the same thing in one form or another. I feel like this song has resonated the most with me since writing it. I remember the exact place it came from and it never loses its meaning no matter how many times I play it.”

Stephanie added that she wanted to “create a music video that […] could potentially help people who are struggling with loss while also giving people a chance to tell their story.”
