GROVELAND —

Update: The two passengers of the 2012 Nissan have been identified as Marcos Lopez Martinez, 22, and Sasha Magana, 22. Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene, and Magana is at a nearby hospital suffering from major injuries, according to the CHP.

Five people are dead and two are injured after a head-on collision on HWY 120 at Smith Station Road near Groveland on Saturday night, according to Sonora CHP.

The accident happened shortly after 6:30 p.m., when one of two vehicles — a 2012 Mercedes registered out of San Jose and a 2012 Nissan registered in Merced — crossed over a center divider.

Both cars reportedly caught fire, even causing a fire to the hillside. All three fires are out, but the highway between Smith Station and Ferretti Road will be closed.

The surviving two victims were air lifted to the hospital, but the extent of their injuries are currently unknown, according to the CHP.
