As expected, Dell’s new XPS 15 laptop features a slim design, super-thin bezels around the screen, and an optional Ultra HD display.

The new Dell XPS 15 with a 6th-gen Intel Core Skylake processor is now available from Dell.com for $1000 and up.

While I don’t pay a lot of attention to most notebooks with 15.6 inch displays (they’re not very Lilliputian, after all), the XPS 15 stands out for a few reasons.

At just under 4 pounds, it’s pretty light for a laptop with a large screen. Second, thanks to the slim bezels (which we first saw on the XPS 13 line of laptops), Dell says it’s crammed a 15.6 inch display into a system the size of a typical 14 inch laptop. While there’s no standard size for 14 inch laptops, Dell’s statement doesn’t seem like hyperbole: the bezels are just 0.22 inches thick.

So what else has Dell crammed into this 3.9 pound, 0.67 inch thick notebook?

The entry-level model features a Core i3-6100U processor, 8GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive, a 1920 x 1080 pixel “InfinityEdge” display, 802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 4.1, a 56 Whr battery, a Thunderbolt 3 port, two USB 3.0 ports, a headset jack, and an SD card reader.

The computer has a backlit keyboard, a Precision glass touchpad, and an aluminum case.

Dell also offers models with up to 512GB of solid state storage, up to 16GB of RAM, an optional 3840 x 2160 pixel touchscreen display with Corning Gorilla Glass, and optional NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M graphics. Some of those higher-priced models also feature 84 Whr batteries.

  1. They just raised the price $200 per model.

Update: They didn’t increase $200 per model. It looks like they removed the $1000 model (that didn’t come with 960m graphics) giving the illusion that the cheapest model is $200 more.

    1. Hmm… It looks more complicated than that. The cheapest model on the website now has a 1TB hard drive, compared with a 500GB version that was listed yesterday.

  2. Gah, I would have leapt on this if it’d been released earlier, but then the Surface Book came out of nowhere and now I wanna see the final specs of that before buying anything.

  3. Dell has always turned out heavy, boring, but working laptops. Nice to see Dell putting out these really nice models. It’s going to be hard to pass one of these up when my current daily driver hits retirement age.
