I thought this was a pretty cool rendition of the original game I played as a kid. I was a little miffed at first when I saw it did the rankings backwards (10 being the Marshall and 2 being the scout ) but then found you could change it back to the original ranking like the board game. Not only that but there are 3 different boards to choose from and different obstacle arrangements as well, which put a different twist on the game without ruining it. I've read reviews where they are so disgusted that there are only a few initial arrangements for the starting board but that didn't really matter to me, I could never figure out the best way to place them anyway. As far as the AI goes I have found it challenging enough for me. Keep in mind I'm not in any Stratego League or s**t like that ... I just find it enjoying and fun. That works for me.
As JJCEO and Tinfoot have pointed out, there is indeed IAP. I don't like IAP, and it is usually done to not give you the entire game. It is clear here that isn't exactly the case, but I'd much prefer the 15 levels be included and the price upped a buck. I also don't like the intrusive ad spam for the IAP.
I'm not happy about the adware/spyware components either, and am glad my tablet is firewalled. There's just no sense in "analytics" other than to gather information about you, your game play, your device, etc., all of which is data that belongs to you and you should have complete control over what - if anything - is revealed to others.
GAME PLAY: Unlike ANY other game of which I am aware, fully 1/2 of the game of Stratego is devising a strategy and setting it up! This app DOES allow you to create your own layout, and even allows you to choose different battlefields. But especially important is that it makes it incredibly hard to do so! Instead of removing the top half of the screen, it takes up extraordinarily critical screen real estate for no real good reason. Further, clicking the red X in the upper right closes out the setup and starts the game instead of simply closing the top section. Thankfully, these are something that the developer can *easily* correct in a future update.
Also, instead of you choosing pieces individually, you must SWAP pieces. This makes it extremely difficult to make tactical decisions - the field is so cluttered with every piece that it is difficult to visualize battlements and pathways. There's no good reason for this litter; the developer really should allow you to pick and choose pieces as you see fit, and place them on a nearly full-screen landscape field.
While I do like that the battlefield does rotate while playing to make it easier to see, it does NOT allow you to see the graveyard while you play. That's an important set of facts that are readily available in the original game. If the developer wants a variant, simply include a checkbox in the settings that hides the graveyard inspection button.
CAMPAIGN: The developer calls this a campaign, but in reality it is by far the BEST tutorial series I've ever seen in a game! By the time you complete all the campaigns you should have a good feel about how to play the game and how the basic mechanics work.
TL;DR: Major UX and UI blunders plus unwanted and intrusive IAP and crappy code mar an otherwise excellent rendition. Still, the tutorial is awesome.
Very aggravating game. This is more a game of chance, as in you have none. The ai seems to always know were your flag is, maybe because the ai gets to place your pieces at the start. Maybe would be better if you had control over initial placements. Try it when it becomes free, but in no other way should you pay for this.
It's been 50-some yerars since I last played Stratego. It has the same problems: mosrt of the game consists of setting up your armies, bombs and flag well, and actually platying the game is slow. And when you're going downhill, the agony seems to last forever. On the other hand, it's not the big hassle of finding someone who wants to play for a half hour.
The default has the numbers reversed, but I found an option to call field marshal 1, miners 8, etc. On the other hand, the pieces are so small. it's hard to see what is where. Come to think of it, that was a problem back in 1963, too.
I don't have the patience I once had, buy back then, I fought to the last to prevent Danny or Bob from lording their victory over me. These days, I can just quit. and try again 8 hours latr. In 1963, this was my favorite game, despite all the flaws, and it's still an addictive game.
Great game and app. Played it a lot as a kid, and this app works just like the board game. You can do quick battles, standard battles (like the board game), or campaigns. It allows for different numeric rankings, 1-10 or 10-1, as well as many other settings. It comes free with one campaign containing various battles but other campaigns are available for a very small purchase.
It will even hand out achievement awards, however, the release I have does not record the earned achievements. After earning an achievement, I look through earned achievements and it still does not show I've earned any. I emailed the company and they responded saying they will look into this upon their next release.
I purchased this from my fire hd. I could not find a way to refund the day of because I couldn't see the purchase in my amazon acct? The app doesn't work. I never got to play it. Who do I even contact?
Brings back my childhood. Playing this game is fun. Was able to complete all the games in about 1 hour on difficulty 2 (Medium). Didn't experience any lock-up. Even lost remembered previous game when I closed the app. I taught my 11 years old and she loves the game as well. She has IOS and there wasn't a free version, like the Android. However, the $2 cost was more than reasonable and she is having a blast.
I do wish there was a play over the network option. I would enjoy playing people (my daughter), not just a computer.
