DAVIS —
A standoff inside a Davis home Thursday night had Glacier Drive absolutely swamped with squad cars.
In the middle of the madness, a mine-resistant, ambush-protected truck, or MRAP for short.
It shielded police from possible gunfire inside the home.
“Initially we thought there was still an armed subject still in the house,” said Lt. Thomas Waltz of the Davis Police Department. “Obviously there’s a need for it.”
But last night, they didn’t have the MRAP.
In October, Davis City Councilmembers voted 3-2 to remove the military style vehicle from the city’s arsenal.
“Our MRAP went to the City of Woodland, so they graciously brought it back down,” Waltz said. “We also used it last night to move robots into the area.”
Inside the home, authorities say they found the bodies of 27-year-old Whitney Engler and 23-year-old Joe Hein.
It appears to be a murder-suicide.
Whitney’s friend Caitlin Koontz says it doesn’t make sense.
As far as she knows the two were only roommates and had no problems with one another.
“We’re devastated, just profoundly saddened and really heartbroken,” Koontz said.
