DONNER SUMMIT —

You can hear it whistling in the wind, a light snow falling in a late Sierra storm.

But many people didn’t see it coming.

Dressed for spring or summer, travelers shuffled through the storm to find shelter.

As sheets of light snow swirled across the parking lot, it was still a struggle to scoop it up.

It did start snowing at Donner Summit earlier this evening, but it really was just tiny snow flurries.

So this is just a hint of what’s to come overnight.

FOX40 captured the storm’s progression in a time lapse video.

You can see the clouds darken as snow touched down on the mountain tops.

By nightfall, the storm was expected to pick up some steam.

The national weather service issued a winter weather advisory, forecasting 3-6 inches of snowfall overnight.
