Today’s Walking Photo: During today’s walk my feet trod the same ground, hardwood, linoleum and concrete garage floor as the feets of Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Jackie Wilson, Martha Reeves, Edwin Starr, Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross and so many others – not to mention the monumental Funk Brothers! I made it to the Motown Museum in Detroit and took the guided tour, and it was a peak experience. I knew I was somewhere special when I noticed the woman in the box office absentmindedly humming along to “My Girl” on the PA, when it must’ve been the hundredth time she’d heard it that day!
They don’t allow cameras inside the museum; otherwise there would be action shots of me being a standout museumgoer – knowing who recorded Tamla Records’ first release, “Money”; and correctly identifying the attic space that was visible through a hole in the ceiling as the studio’s reverb chamber (the sound of which was regarded as Motown’s “secret sauce”). So all you get is this exterior shot of the museum, which is the house in which Berry Gordy, Jr. grew up and ultimately turned into his recording empire. To expand the company, he just kept buying additional houses on the same block!
If you ever make it to Detroit, get yourself over to this museum. It’s worth your time.
