I found that learning shakesperian dialect laid the foundation for understanding when deciphering other fine literature.
Di'Caprio wasn't very famous at that point (though I believe he'd already been nominated for an oscar for an indy film). Later that night, I had dinner with friends and predicted that this boy would become the biggest star in Hollywood -- by tomorrow! I was off by a couple of years. Rare in film history has there been such a perfect casting -- Leonardo DiCaprio as Romeo. The mythical balcony scene is freshly designed and executed wonderfully, bringing the myth to life before our eyes. But the crowning glory and superpower of this film is the 'love at first sight' scene - ironic in that there are no words spoken (words being Shakespeare's superpower). It's all done with the eyes by the two young genius actors, combined with inspired camera work and the devastating vocal performance of Des'ree. This is one of the most beautiful, greatest, and most powerful scenes in cinematic history.
What is this emotion -- love at first sight? It might only happen two or three times in our entire lives. It isn't real love. So is it just trivial, adolescent silliness? I think it is much more than that -- and so did Shakespeare. What is our emotional relationship with our desires that can never be? We're haunted forever by the impossiblity of perfect love as much as we were ever thrilled by the fantasy of it. Baz Luhrmann's 'Romeo & Juliet' taps deeply into the impossible longings that never leave us. It is a masterpiece.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure that too much of the acting in this movie was really award worthy, at least coming from Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. The standouts are in the minor roles played by John Leguizamo, Paul Sorvino, and Pete Postlethwaite. The directing was so overpowering, though, that this movie still manages to be a classic without particularly strong leads. Claire Danes's face and presence really seem to say something, but she really just doesn't have the talent. She is pretty and looks the part, but her part would have been better recast. Sorry to say. DiCaprio does ok here, but perhaps someone would have done better than him as well. As with a lot of actors in Shakespearean roles, I'm not sure he totally understands the emotionality and the dialogue. I take off one star and I'm not sure why, but I think the language may have made it hard to connect with the emotionality of the movie, and DiCaprio and Danes were a little bit wooden. It was slightly hard to connect with the emotional developments of the story. The big score here (and I mean big) is the stylistic side of this movie: the scenery, music, and frenetic, surreal, and campy tone. Amazing.
In any event, this movie still manages to be a sweeping and powerful tour de force for Luhrmann. It is a singular effort that keeps its gusto and inspiration alive from beginning to end. The creative drive for it was a stroke of genius for Luhrmann, and his trademark style works here the best for any of his movies, except perhaps for in "Strictly Ballroom." He had a notable swing and a miss with "Moulin Rouge," and "Gatsby" simply didn't quite pop, in spite of not being as bad as "Moulin Rouge." The idea that someone made this movie out of nowhere in 1996 was a revaluation. This movie is brilliantly creative, and everyone should see it!

For some, it might be "news" that Romeo & Juliet was written by Shakespeare hundreds of years after the saga unfolded -- similar issues exist to this very day .. and kids today are still exposed in school today about Shakespeare .. this is a great version on film to connect what generally confounds young students ( as they question why they have to even know about this play or any of his plays / sonnets )
everyone I've shared this film with ( from highly educated down to young children ) have all enjoyed this little bit of history in a fun way
To some, this is silly nonsense that doesn't necessarily hold its' place in the real world, perhaps to some in that class, it is dangerous in that it encourages vulnerability and even an unrealistic idea on love, or human relationships...
But I am sold. I am a normal modern human-being who, in a fast world, is often only receptive to what can catch my senses by shouting loud enough. But, after hearing and seeing Baz Lurhmann's sexy, modernised (but unadulterated) take on this classic love story, it has almost completely polarised my opinion and (lack of) interest in William Shakespeare, and what he has brought to the World (which as those already there will know, can be a big personal moment).
The story is well-set and well-played. It's quite hard to summarise in such a short article quite how large and complicated everything was, but it all comes together in an emotional climax that leaves many shattered at its' end.
I'm thankful for the musical score, which tears you along and sweeps you up into the moments that this movie gives you on-screen. The pictures are 2D, but watch this with a 3D sound system, and it'll just suck you up.
I'm thankful for the skill of the cast, who managed to dodge the proverbial bullet of having original Shakespearean text in a modern-day setting sound ridiculous (even though for some this may be unavoidable). Moreover, because I was interested, and listening, I can now appreciate the inherent poetry and in-built extra meaning and weight in every famous phrase, instead of what I previously thought was garble.
I'm thankful for Baz Lurhmann and co., for their ability to carve out such a fantastic vision that left me, again, shattered; it was absolutely intense. I love a movie that can soak you up, and this take on Romeo + Juliet accomplishes it well.
This version of the DVD has a load of extras as well, with takes on how the movie came together, and all of the people behind it. I found the accompanying extras to be quite an eye opener, but watch them after you've seen the movie.
Overall, I was blown away by the movie and pleased with the extras that give you a real insight into what went on behind the cameras. I recommend this to people who have anything of a taste for movies. Really, it's that good.
