A school bus hit a 6-year-old boy and caused minor injuries at the intersection of East 17th and Huston streets in Marysville on Friday morning, officals said.
The child, a student at Cordua Elementary School who was walking to a bus stop at McKenney Intermediate School, was taken by ambulance to Rideout Regional Medical Center for X-rays, California Highway Patrol Capt. Shon Harris said.
Initial reports indicated the boy may have run into the side of the moving school bus, however, after speaking to a witness who was stopped at the intersection, officers believe the child was crossing the roadway at the intersection when the bus struck him, Harris said.
The boy was following another child north on Huston Street through the stop-sign contolled intersection across East 17th Street when he was hit by the bus as it turned left from Huston Street onto East 17th Street. The child was sucked under the bus and he came to rest on the right side of the bus. The child was not run over by a tire, Harris said.
"He was very, very lucky," Harris said.
The accident occurred at 7:44 a.m. and the driver, Maria E. Cruz, 58, of Yuba City, stopped immediately when she heard a scream and saw people waving. She said she did not see the child, Harris said.
It was sprinkling at the time of the accident, but Harris said he did not believe poor visibility due to rain was a factor. Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor.
Two Kynoch students were riding on the bus at the time of the accident and were transported to school by Marysville Joint Unified School District Superintendent Gay Todd.
Assistant Superintendent of Business Services Ryan DiGiulio also responded to the scene and said the school made counselors available to the students.
"We want to do anything we can to ensure the safety of our students," DiGiulio said. "We're thankful all appearances are that (his injuries) aren't too serious and the boy will be OK."
