Chef’s Notes: The Farm Table, Wheyward Girl Creamery

THE FARM TABLE
The Farm Table is Placerville’s new restaurant and market. It uses the best local and seasonal ingredients and offers gluten-free and vegetarian options.

The restaurant offers house-made specialty meats, pickled seasonal vegetables, preserves and condiments, local and imported craft beer and wine, and gourmet gifts and souvenirs.

The restaurant’s owners are Zach and Kara Taylor, who started Smokey Ridge Charcuterie in 2010. After four years developing a loyal following at farmers markets, through their club, and at their family farm stand, they decided it was time to expand and offer year-round convenience to their customers with The Farm Table at 311 Main St. OurFarmTable.com

WHEYWARD GIRL CREAMERY
Downtown Nevada City’s lower Commercial Street neighborhood is being transformed into its own food lovers’ district, as we’ve written before. It is home to the Nevada City Farmers Market, Three Forks Bakery & Brewing Co. and a farm-to-table banquet August 16. Now an artisan creamery
is planned next door to Three Forks called Wheyward Girl Creamery.

The creamery’s owners are Barbara Jenness, a master cheesemaker who ran an award-winning farmstead creamery in Michigan, and Roberta DesBouillons, an accomplished chef who helped launch the in-house culinary program at Tess’ Kitchen Store in Grass Valley. Barbara also teaches cheesemaking classes at Tess’ and BriarPatch Coop.

Wheyward Girl plans to make artisan cheese, using locally sourced goat, sheep and cow’s milk. It will sell cheese and teach cheesemaking classes. Wheyward Girl plans to open this summer at 209 Commercial Street.

BISTRO 103 IN OLD TOWN AUBURN
The Tsuda Grocery building, a fixture at the corner of Sacramento Street and Lincoln Way in Old Town Auburn since the ‘50s, is now the home to Bistro 103.

The bistro offers farm-to-fork, fresh and local fare for lunch and dinner. Menu items include mushroom risotto, pepper steak, Mary’s free-range roasted chicken, lamb vindaloo and fresh fish such as ahi tuna.

It carries craft beer from local breweries such as Auburn Alehouse, across the street, and local wines. The owners are a husband-and-wife team, Patty and John Dooley. Bistro103Auburn.com
