Peter, Nick, and I are excited to announce that Cloak is now part of StackPath, a still-stealthy startup based in Dallas, Texas that has bold plans for online security.
Memory lane
Way back when, the three of us started Cloak to solve a simple problem: being caffeine addicts, we often worked from Seattle coffee shops and we knew we couldn’t trust their Wi-Fi. We wanted a tool that automatically kept us safe online. We couldn’t find that tool, so we built it.
Over time, thanks to your feedback and support, we refined that tool, leading to the Cloak we know and love today. And thanks to you, Cloak has grown into a successful, profitable business.
Better, faster
We’re excited to join StackPath. Together, we have the resources and the will to make Cloak better, faster than we think we could on our own.
What exactly do we mean?
Those of you who have watched us for a while know that we’ve historically kept quiet about our future plans… but — what the heck! — today seems like a fun day to break the mold:
-
We’re excited to announce that, thanks to StackPath, we are building native Cloak apps for Android and Windows.
-
We’re excited to announce that a public release of Cloak for Teams is on its way. This nifty service lets teams of all sizes centrally manage Cloak accounts and billing. (Get in touch if you’d like to join the beta today.)
And that’s just the start. We’ll have more to share soon.
The team
Moving fast is fine and good, but there’s another more important reason we’re excited to join: the StackPath team.
As we’ve gotten to know them, we’ve discovered we have a lot to talk about. We share a common desire to make security and privacy better and more accessible for everyone. We care a great deal about the broader issues of online privacy; our first conversations with StackPath’s engineers about the Snowden disclosures were entertaining.
StackPath was started by Lance Crosby, who previously founded SoftLayer and was its CEO until its 2013 sale to IBM. In a nice twist, Cloak’s VPN network runs almost entirely on SoftLayer. In a nicer twist, the team Lance is building at StackPath has deep business, networking, and security expertise: the very expertise we’ll need to take on our ambitious future plans for Cloak.
Peter and I have joined StackPath and we’ll be guiding Cloak forward. There will be new faces, too. We can’t wait to share what’s next!
