SACRAMENTO, Calif. – On March 21, 2016, at approximately 7:45 a.m., Thomas Dawson of Auburn, Calif., was arrested at his home for his involvement in a fatal hit-and-run collision that occurred in the early morning hours of December 14, 2015.  Investigators determined that Dawson, 51, was behind the wheel of the late 1990’s model Ford Ranger pickup truck that struck 30-year-old Samuel Melgoza near Elkhorn Boulevard and 20th Street, just outside of Rio Linda.   Melgoza suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.

The North Sacramento Area CHP Special Investigation Unit received several tips from the public in the weeks following the collision.  Information obtained from the tips led the investigating officers to the location of the Ford Ranger.

Dawson was arrested and booked into the Sacramento County Jail on the following charges:

  • C.V.C. 20001 – Felony Hit and Run
  • P.C. 192 (C) (2) – Felony Voluntary Vehicular Manslaughter
  • P.C. 135 (B) – Misdemeanor Destruction of Evidence

Any questions should be directed to Officer Guillermo Garcia at (916) 731-6516.[/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]
