EUREKA, Kan. (KSNW) – A 7-year-old girl drowned in Eureka in Greenwood County late Tuesday afternoon.

The Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release deputies were dispatched to the scene of a possible drowning at the Fall River Bridge on the west side of Eureka shortly before 4:50 p.m.

When they arrived on the scene with Greenwood County EMS and Eureka City Rescue, they found a man clinging to a log in the river below the low-water dam.  A short time later, deputies were able to locate the girl who was partially submerged in the river.

Sheriff Rusty Bitler said two deputies entered the river, pulled the girl out and immediately began CPR on her.

Bitler said the child was taken to Greenwood County Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

The sheriff’s office is investigating the incident, Bitler said.
