San Francisco police say a German tourist was killed when she was caught in crossfire between two groups in the city’s tourism hub.
Authorities identified the woman Monday as 50-year-old Mechthild Schroeer of Minden, Germany.
Schroeer was fatally shot around 9 p.m. Sunday in the Union Square area.
Sgt. Troy Dangerfield says Schroeer was an unintended victim who was caught in an altercation between two groups that began their dispute at a nearby event. He says investigators are looking into whether the incident was gang-related.
Two other people suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the shooting.
Dangerfield says three adults and two juveniles have been detained for questioning. He says officers also have recovered a weapon.
