LONDON – Gabriela Cowperthwaite‘s BAFTA-nominated documentary Blackfish will swim to screens across Asia, Italy, Portugal, Central and Eastern Europe, Africa, Scandinavia and Latin America.
U.K. distributor Dogwoof has inked a multi-territory sales deal with Universal Pictures International Entertainment, a NBCUniversal division, for the film that tells the story of Tilikum, a performing killer whale that killed several people while in captivity.
Blackfish was acquired by Dogwoof in 2013 following its world premiere at Sundance, while the multi-territory deal with NBCUniversal was brokered by Ana Vicente, head of theatrical for Dogwoof.
Other territories already sold by Dogwoof include German- and French-speaking Europe, Spain, The Netherlands and a multi-territory deal with Netflix.
The film aired on CNN in the U.S.

“This deal [with UPIE] is the culmination of an amazing year for Blackfish. It so rewarding to see how passionate Universal feels about i, which is what we at Dogwoof look for in the partners for the films we represent,” Vicente said.
Using original footage and interviews with ex-trainers, Cowperthwaite’s film creates a story that could be mistaken for a horror movie if it weren’t all real, according to Dogwoof.
