SACRAMENTO-

Everyone excepts planes to be landing daily at Sacramento International Airport, but now on the arrival board for Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday – food trucks.

“It’s worth a shot and we’re going to be part of history. We’re starting something new. We’re the first truck out here,” said Naeema Afzili, of the Gyro King truck.

Gyro King is the first in a savory string of mobile kitchens, slated to set up service in the airport’s free-waiting area, otherwise known as the cell phone lot.

“It’s pretty cool,” said Paula Bell, of Folsom.

It was an unexpected treat for the Bell family as they waited for oldest daughter Sarah to fly back in to town from college.

Families like the Bells can spend up to three hours at the lot waiting for the call that a loved one has touched down. That means there’s definitely time to chow down.

The food truck set-up is also a treat for employees of Sac International and related services like cab companies.

They’ve been hungry for the kind of variety nearby gas station shelves cant’s provide.

“As long as we have a nice truck in here, why not? It’s cheaper, good food and more healthy,” said cabbie Aziz Rahmani.

“We’ve been talking to the cab drivers. They’re getting tired of the same regular food,” said Afzili.

And like any good news, word of this new kitchen caper spread fast.

Neal Harrington of Vancouver, Wash. didn’t have anybody to pick up at the airport. He just heard an ad on the radio and pulled off Interstate 5.

“I stopped for food. Just stopped on I-5 and a gyros is exactly what I need,” he said.

The Slightly Skewed truck will be at the airport on Wednesday from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m.
