• Revisiting Maternalism and Its Legacy: Gender, Power, Health Policy, and Place in the United States, 1912–55

  These three studies focus on the relationship between state-formation and health policy development in the American West.
• Founding Villains: Liars, Scoundrels, and Thieves in the Making of America

  Preservation Hall, Studio 7 (New Orleans Marriott)
  Taken together, our papers investigate the social construction and meaning of villainy as it relates to national identity constructed in the nineteenth century.
• Beyond Consensus: American Intellectual and Political Life, 1945–73
  11:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.,
  Preservation Hall, Studio 7 (New Orleans Marriott)
  This roundtable speaks to three of the most important historiographical tendencies in the study of the postwar United States.
• Historians, Journalists, and the Challenges of Getting It Right: The Death and Life of Great American Newspapers

  Preservation Hall, Studio 6 (New Orleans Marriott)
  Inspired by the dramatic recent events in Egypt, this panel will discuss comparative cases of popular uprisings in Tunisia, South Africa, Eastern Europe, and protest movements in the U.S.
