The MTV Video Music Awards‘ Moonman has been redesigned for the first time ahead of the show’s upcoming debut in Brooklyn.
The iconic trophy has been given a face-lift by artist KAWS, who rose to fame during the mid-’90s with his graffiti tags and reworkings of bus stop ads. Since then, he’s worked with Nike and Marc Jacobs and designed toys and a balloon of his Mickey Mouse-inspired character, Companion, which flew in last year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
KAWS also has redesigned other familiar icons, including the Simpsons and Michelin Man. He’s lived and worked in Brooklyn for nearly a decade.
KAWS’ trophy will only be handed out at this year’s ceremony.

“That’s what I liked about the project; I wouldn¹t want to redesign it for history, I like the idea that at this moment, this first time in Brooklyn, the Moonman’s going to change,” KAWS told MTV News. “I like the fact that, 40 or 60 artists will win this piece, and the majority won’t know anything about my work.”
KAWS’ Moonman features a gun-metal finish, a skull-and-crossbones head with long ears and Companion’s cartoonish gloves, inspired by Mickey Mouse’s.
The 2013 VMAs are set to air live from Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on Aug. 25.
