TORONTO – Steve McQueen‘s 12 Years a Slave was named best film on Tuesday night at the Vancouver Film Critics Circle awards.
The 14th edition of the Canadian fest also gave Joel and Ethan Coen‘s Inside Llewyn Davis the best actor trophy for Oscar Isaac‘s performance as well as the best screenplay prize.
Vancouver critics also named Alfonso Cuaron best director for sci-fi survival thriller Gravity, while Blue Jasmine’s Cate Blanchett won the best actress award.

Also in the acting categories, Dallas Buyers Club‘s Jared Leto earned the best supporting actor prize, while American Hustle’s Jennifer Lawrence won for best supporting actress.
Thomas Vinterberg‘s The Hunt was named best foreign film, and Joshua Oppenheimer‘s The Act of Killing won for best documentary.
The big winner in Vancouver in the Canadian film categories was Matt Johnson‘s The Dirties, which was named best film and best first film by a Canadian director.
Johnson was also named best actor in a Canadian film for his star turn in The Dirties.
Elsewhere, the best Canadian director prize went to Jeff Barnaby for Rhymes for Young Ghouls, while the best Canadian film actress was awarded to Sophie Desmarais for Sarah Prefers to Run. Gabrielle‘s Alexandre Landry won for best supporting actor in a Canadian film and Tom at the Farm‘s Lise Roy earned the best supporting actress prize for a Canadian film.
